Mallala in straight sets

Mallala Football Club hosted Hummocks Watchman Eagles on Saturday.

A Grade-

Although the Eagles were undefeated & looking dangerous after the first two round, Mallala had reason to feel confident with the return of a few key players.

The first quarter was a close affair with the lead changing hands may times.

Mallala got away early in the second but even after loosing two (2) players to match ending injuries, the Eagles managed to get back to within three (3) points at the long break.

Mallala came out & stunned the Eagles in the third, kicking eight goals to one& went on to win the match by 58 points.

Reserves

Mallala completely dominated over an under manned Eagles team, running out winners by 130 points.

The return of players to the A Grade forced a few back down to the Reserves which certainly improved the ball handling skills of the team.

Mallala were never challenged during the match but I feel it will be a totally different story against Two Well in the next match.

Senior Colts-

Mallala were in control from the first to the last siren, but were wasteful in front of goal & should have won by a greater margin.

In the end they ran out easy winners by 136 points.

Junior Colts-

Mallala were also in control over a struggling Eagles side.

The mercy rule came into play at three quarter time, Mallala lads playing for the Eagles to make an even contest.

Mallala winning by 77 points.

There is no football this Saturday due to Easter. Our next match is on 30 April against Two Wells on their ground.

Have a good & safe Easter & I hope to see you at Two Wells supporting the lads.

Great Start to Season!!

What a great start to this season so far! Our first game against Virginia was a great success for Mallala.
Our A1, A4, A5 Home and Away (against Long Plains), C1 and C2 teams all won their first game! Our A2 team drew and our B grade lost by 1 point! So only our A3 team had a loss for the day, but is looking forward to future success. Our newly formed A6 team has not yet hit the court. There are two byes for them in the season, due to all Clubs not been able to fill this grade.

We started out with extremely high numbers this year. We had 64 registered and paid players on our registration night in February. We currently have 60 registered players filling our 7 senior teams. We must give a big thank you to Josie McArdle, APNA President, in her recommendation of fielding A6 this year. Also, to the other Clubs who have changed their teams around at the last minute to fill this A6 team. They have truly helped us out immensely.

Our Coaches this year are: A1 Courtney Kerr, A2 Megan Rimmer, A3 Rosie Eckermann, A4 Dawn Buckby, A5 Home Claire Blacket, A5 Away Jodie Wilson, A6 Sharna Wildbore. Junior Coaches – B Grade Amy Jordan, C1 Heather Forder, C2 Jodie Wilson, D1 Penny Matthew, D2 Clare Bruggemann, D3 (skills) Tarnia Pratt. Thank you to all our junior team helpers Eva Wilson, Tracey Kennett, Midge May, Clare Howard and Jane Farrelly.

Under manned but competitive

Mallala Football Club hosted Virginia on Saturday.

A Grade-

With Mallala starting the grand final rematch with a number of first choice players missing due to other commitments, Virginia were expected to control the game. Mallala started as they had finished 2010 with slick ball movement from the centre and went to a couple goals up early on . The Virginia players then seemed to settle and as a result started to win the ball around the ground. With straight kicking at goal it wasn’t long before they hit the front and created a comfortable lead. Mallala lads tried hard all day however could not bridge the gap. Virginia won the rematch, but we can all look forward to the next encounter between these clubs especially if they are both at full strength.

Reserves

With a young inexperience side Mallala struggled all day. Virginia led from the start, increasing their lead throughout the match.

The Mallala lads didn’t have any trouble getting the ball, but wasted their efforts by turning the ball over with poor delivery especially when penetrating into the forward 50.

The return of several key players to the A Grade side next match should bring valuable experience & ball skills back down to the Reserves.

Senior Colts-

The first quarter saw Mallala missing a few opportunities in front of goal, whilst Virginia made the most of their attempts to lead at the first siren. The game then became a real struggle as Mallala would catch up only to see Virginia reply. In the last Quarter Mallala hit the front and then goaled again to go 7 points up with little time left to play. Virginia to their credit refused to concede and goaled to be within a point. They then moved the ball quickly out of the centre straight down the ground and finished with a goal to put them 5 points up. With only 20 seconds left they held on to win.

Junior Colts-

Due to Virginia being short of a few players, a couple of Mallala boys had to play for Virginia to even up the numbers. Mallala started the game well kicking enough goals in the first half whilst restricting Virginia to enforce the mercy rule at half time. The game continued the same way in the second half with Mallala finishing far too strong for Virginia.
